1 / 12

Теория: negative inversion

Когда предложение начинается с отрицательного или ограничительного выражения (never — никогда, rarely / seldom — редко, hardly / scarcely — едва, no sooner — не успел, not only — не только, little — мало, едва, nowhere — нигде, at no time — ни разу), порядок слов меняется как в вопросе: вспомогательный глагол ставится перед подлежащим. Сравните: • I have never seen such a mess. • Never have I seen such a mess. Если в предложении есть модальный глагол, вперёд выносится он сам: • Under no circumstances can the file leave the building. • On no account may staff share client data. Конструкция not only … but also … усиливает перечисление, а hardly и scarcely связывают два события во времени: • Not only did she sing, but she also played the piano. • Hardly had I arrived when the phone rang. • Scarcely had we sat down when it started raining. Так неправильно: • NOT Never I have seen such a mess — верно Never have I seen such a mess: после наречия нельзя оставлять обычный порядок слов. • NOT Not only she did sing — верно Not only did she sing: при did смысловой глагол стоит в начальной форме. • NOT Hardly had I arrived than the phone rang — верно Hardly had I arrived when the phone rang: после hardly и scarcely идёт when, а не than.

В простом времени появляется do / does / did, и смысловой глагол уходит в базовую форму: Rarely does a supplier admit an error.
