What do you do for a living?

What do you do for a living?

How to ask about someone's job and talk about your own. Questions (see the table): • Ne iş yapıyorsunuz? “What do you do for a living?” — literally “what work do you do?”; • Mesleğiniz ne? “What is your occupation?”; • Nerede çalışıyorsunuz? “Where do you work?” Answers: • the job + a personal ending, with no “a”: Avukatım “I'm a lawyer”. Tercümanım. İşsizim “I'm unemployed”; • the job + olarak çalışıyorum: Şoför olarak çalışıyorum “I work as a driver”. The word olarak is English “as”: it comes after the job, and the job itself doesn't change; • the place: Bir şirkette çalışıyorum. The ending -cı / -ci / -cu means “someone who does it”: program “program” → programcı, spor “sport” → sporcu. After a voiceless consonant (p, ç, t, k, f, h, s, ş) it's written with ç: iş → işçi, aşçı. Common mistakes: • NOT “Ben avukat” → Ben avukatım; • NOT “Doktorla çalışıyorum” (that means “I work with a doctor”) → Doktor olarak çalışıyorum.
