Clothes, colors, and “I like”
A color comes before the noun and never changes, not for the plural and not for a case: կարմիր զգեստ, սև կոշիկներ. Some colors are “something + գույն”: մոխրագույն — gray, “ash-colored”. To ask about a color: Ի՞նչ գույնի է — “what color is it?”
“I like” is the verb հավանել, and it works like English “like”: the one who likes is the subject. Order: who — what — verb. Այս վերնաշապիկը հավանում եմ — “I like this shirt”. “I don't like” is չեմ հավանում. For a thing you see and like, use հավանել; սիրել is “to love, be fond of”. A thing after այս, այդ, այն takes -ը or -ն.
In a store:
• Կարելի՞ է փորձել — can I try it on?
• Ուրիշ չափս կա՞ — is there another size? (ուրիշ — other)
Written ≠ heard: in հագնել you write գ but hear [kʰ]; in փորձել you write ձ but hear [tsʰ].
Don't confuse: կանաչ — green, կանաչի — greens (herbs).
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Ես սիրում եմ այս զգեստը” about a dress in the store → Այս զգեստը հավանում եմ
• NOT “այս զգեստ հավանում եմ” → այս զգեստը հավանում եմ
• NOT “զգեստ կարմիր” (meaning “a red dress”) → կարմիր զգեստ
Colors
The color comes before the word and doesn't change. The last three words are to recognize only: you don't need to write them.
