I can order at a café — Dám si…, Prosím si…, Chcem si objednať…, — put si in second position, invite someone: Pozývam ťa / vás na kávu, — and say thank you: Ďakujem za…
Dám si…: the short word si in second position
Dám si…: the short word si in second position
Why: to order at a café and invite someone. In a café you don't order with a bare chcem (“I want”); you say dám si (“I'll have”): Dám si…, Prosím si…, Chcem si objednať… The waiter asks: Čo si dáte?
si means “for myself, for yourself”. It's a short word, like sa in module 3, and it comes second, right after the first word or phrase: Dám si pizzu; Pán Varga si dá pivo; Juraj a Eva si dajú džús. After chcem, môžem it also comes right after them: Chcem si objednať… The table is next to this text.
To invite: Pozývam ťa na … (to a friend), Pozývam vás na … (with vy): set phrases. Careful: ťa “you” and tá “that”, vás “you” and váš “your” differ only by the mark.
After čakať, pozývať, myslieť comes na; after ďakovať, platiť comes za; then the accusative. “Think about” is myslieť na, “wait for” is čakať na. The table is next to this text.
Café phrases: káva s mliekom, čaj bez cukru, so sebou (to go), dvakrát kávu (two coffees).
Common mistakes:
• ×Dám pizzu si → Dám si pizzu
• ×Si dáš…? → Dáš si…?
• ×myslieť o → myslieť na
