Қашан? Dates, months, and ordinal numbers

Қашан? Dates, months, and ordinal numbers

Why: to say the date, the month, and the season, and when your birthday is. Ordinal numbers (реттік сан есім) answer нешінші? “which (in order)?”. Add -ншы / -нші after a vowel and -ыншы / -інші after a consonant: алты → алтыншы, екі → екінші; он → оныншы, бес → бесінші. In a compound number only the last word changes: он бірінші. Exception: жиырма → жиырмасыншы; forty and fifty have special forms too — they come later. In figures, with a hyphen: 5-сынып “the fifth grade”. A date is an ordinal number + the month: бесінші наурыз “March 5” (literally “fifth March”); in figures 5 наурыз, with no hyphen. Unlike English, Kazakh writes months with a small letter. “In March”, “in summer” take the locative, like “on Saturday”: наурызда, сәуірде; after voiceless consonants -та / -те. Seasons work the same way. Watch out: • май is “butter, oil”; the month May is мамыр; • ай is both “month” and “moon”; жаз is both “summer” and “write!”; • қазан is “October”, маусым “June”; these words have other meanings too, which come later. Common mistakes: • ×жиырманшы → жиырмасыншы; • ×бес наурыз → бесінші наурыз.
