Lesson 4. Shopping: lo, la, los, las

I can ask the price and avoid naming a thing twice: — ¿Compras el jersey? — Sí, lo compro.

1 / 17

How not to repeat the name twice

lo, la, los, las

In an answer you don't repeat the item's name — you replace it with a short word: — ¿Compras el jersey? — Sí, lo compro. English “it” has no gender, but the Spanish word takes the gender and number of the item: el jersey → lo; la falda → la; los zapatos → los; las camisetas → las. The table is below. Position: BEFORE the verb, not after it as in English “I buy it”: La compro. Los llevo al trabajo. In the negative, no comes even earlier: No la compro. With an infinitive, the word attaches to the end (for recognition only for now): ¿Puedes llevarlo? — “can you take it?” A demonstrative (este, ese, aquel) can also stand without the item's name: — ¿Este jersey? — No, ese. — ¿Estas camisetas? — No, aquellas. Price: ¿Cuánto cuesta este abrigo? — Cuesta sesenta euros. For several items: ¿Cuánto cuestan estos zapatos? muy and mucho. Before an adjective — muy: muy caro, muy barata. After a verb — mucho, as you know from the last lesson: Me gusta mucho. Common mistakes: • NOT “Compro lo” — correct: Lo compro. • NOT “Los zapatos, la compro” — correct: los compro; the gender and number come from the item. • NOT “¿Cuánto cuesta los zapatos?” — correct: ¿Cuánto cuestan los zapatos? • NOT “La falda es caro” — correct: La falda es cara. • NOT “Es mucho caro” — correct: Es muy caro.
A word instead of the thing's name

The object pronoun takes the gender and number of the thing and goes before the verb.
