I can say what I'm doing now and every day — Türkçe öğreniyorum, İstanbul'da yaşıyorum — and ask “What are you doing?” — Ne yapıyorsun?
The present tense: -yor
The present tense: -yor
Why: to say what you're doing now (şimdi “now”) and what you do usually (her gün “every day”). English has two presents, “I work” and “I'm working”; Turkish has one: Şimdi çalışıyorum. Her gün çalışıyorum.
A dictionary verb ends in -mak / -mek: yapmak, gelmek; without it you have the stem: yap-, gel-. Add -yor and a personal ending (see the table): gel-i-yorum, geliyorsun, geliyor, geliyoruz, geliyorsunuz, geliyorlar. -yor never changes, and the endings after it are always these. The stress is on the vowel before -yor: geLİyorum, yaPIyorsun. A plural subject lets you drop -lar on the verb: Çocuklar geliyor = Çocuklar geliyorlar.
Before -yor comes ı, i, u or ü by vowel harmony: yapıyor, geliyor, oturuyor, görüyor. A stem ending in u or ü already has it: oku- → okuyor. A final a or e of the stem becomes ı, i, u or ü: bekle- → bekliyor, yaşa- → yaşıyor. Learn these: ye- → yiyor, de- → diyor, git- → gidiyor.
The verb comes last, and the thing you do comes right before it: Ben kitap okuyorum. Place and time come earlier: İstanbul'da yaşıyorum.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Ben okuyorum kitap” → Ben kitap okuyorum
• NOT “bekleyor” → bekliyor
• NOT “Ben geliyor” → Ben geliyorum
The present tense: stem + -yor + ending
-yor itself never changes; only the ending after it does.
| Who | gelmek | yapmak |
|---|---|---|
| ben | geliyorum | yapıyorum |
| sen | geliyorsun | yapıyorsun |
| o | geliyor | yapıyor |

The vowel before -yor
Special cases: a final a or e of the stem becomes ı, i, u or ü — bekle- → bekliyor, yaşa- → yaşıyor; three verbs to learn by heart — ye- → yiyor, de- → diyor, git- → gidiyor.
| The last vowel of the stem | Lips not rounded | Lips rounded |
