Lesson 4. Pouvoir et vouloir: I can, I want, I ask

I can say what I can do and what I want, ask for permission, suggest doing something together, and politely ask someone to repeat.

1 / 16

Je peux, je veux + infinitive

Je peux, je veux + infinitive

Two everyday verbs: say what you can or want to do, ask permission, suggest doing something together. pouvoir: je peux, tu peux, il peut, nous pouvons, vous pouvez, ils peuvent. vouloir: je veux, tu veux, elle veut, nous voulons, vous voulez, elles veulent. Both take the infinitive directly, with no word for English “to”: “Je peux rester”, “Ils veulent partir”. vouloir can also take a noun: “Je veux un café”. Requests and permission are questions: “Est-ce que je peux travailler ici ?”, “Tu peux répondre ?”. “Vous pouvez répéter ?”, which you know, works the same way: pouvoir plus the infinitive. To suggest something, use on: “On peut visiter Lyon ensemble”. Register: “Je veux” is as blunt as “I want”: that's not how you ask an adult you don't know for something. Ask with a pouvoir question and “s'il vous plaît”. Negative with two verbs: ne and pas go around the conjugated verb only (pouvoir or vouloir); the infinitive follows pas: “Nous ne pouvons pas rester”, “Elle ne veut pas partir”. Common mistakes: • NOT “Je peux à entrer” — no preposition after these verbs. • NOT “Elle veut travaille ici” — the second verb is an infinitive. • NOT “Vous peuvez entrer ?” — the vous form is pouvez. • NOT “Nous pouvons pas rester” — in writing, you need ne. • NOT “Je veux un rendez-vous, Madame Dubois” as a request — ask with pouvoir and “s'il vous plaît”.
pouvoir — can, may

After a form of pouvoir, the second verb is in the infinitive, with no preposition.
