The present tense: what I usually do

The present tense: what I usually do

Why: to say what you usually do, every day, in general — where you live, where you work. The time word is күнде “every day”. This is the present tense (осы шақ): one form for English “I write” and “I'm writing”. The dictionary form of a verb ends in -у: жазу “to write”. Without -у you have the stem жаз-. The stem takes -а, -е or -й and the personal ending you know: • after a consonant — -а / -е: жазамын, беремін; • after a vowel — -й: сөйлеймін. The stem of оқу is оқы-: ы + й is written и — оқимын. The form in parentheses next to each word shows the stem. “He, she, they” take -ды / -ді: жазады, береді, сөйлейді. “You” to several people works as before, + -дар / -дер: жазасыңдар, жазасыздар. All the forms are in the table. Word order: unlike English, the verb comes last; the thing you do it to comes right before it, with no ending: Мен кітап оқимын. The question word stands where the answer goes: Сіз қайда тұрасыз? Watch out: тұру means “to live (somewhere)”, and also “to stand”. Common mistakes: • ×Мен оқимын кітап → Мен кітап оқимын; • ×Қайда сіз тұрасыз? → Сіз қайда тұрасыз?; • ×Ол жаза → Ол жазады.
The present tense: three models

Stem + -а / -е / -й + a personal ending; in the “he, she, they” form, -ды / -ді.
