I can talk about the past with modal verbs: what I could do, what I wanted, what I had to do, and what I wasn't allowed to do — konnte, wollte, musste, durfte, sollte, mochte.
Yesterday: konnte, wollte, musste
Yesterday: konnte, wollte, musste
The past of the modals tells what you could, had to, and wanted to do before. The time expressions are familiar: gestern, vorgestern, letzte Woche, früher, am Samstag, am Wochenende.
A modal has one past form, built like war and hatte: können → konnte, wollen → wollte, müssen → musste, dürfen → durfte, sollen → sollte, mögen → mochte.
The umlaut disappears in the past: müssen — but musste, dürfen — but durfte. English “could” is both the past and the polite form; the German past has no dots: konnte.
The endings are those of hatte: ich konnte, du konntest, er konnte, wir konnten, ihr konntet, sie konnten. The ich and er forms are the same.
The bracket doesn't change: the modal in position 2, the second verb in the infinitive at the end: Letzte Woche konnte Felix nicht schwimmen.
The past of the polite möchte is wollte: Ich möchte einen Kaffee → Ich wollte einen Kaffee. wollte means “wanted”, never “would”.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Ich musste zu arbeiten” — no zu after a modal.
• NOT “Du konnte nicht kommen” — wrong form for du: du konntest.
• NOT “Lena wollte gehen zum Konzert” — the second verb goes at the end.
• NOT “Wir mussten üben am Abend” — am Abend comes before the second verb: Wir mussten am Abend üben.
