1 / 14

How often: siempre, a veces, nunca

Frequency words and where they go

These words answer the question “how often”. The tense is the present — this is about habits, and the time expressions are familiar: todos los días, los sábados, el fin de semana. The whole scale is in the table above: six words cover it completely. The word can go before the verb or right after it: Siempre ceno en casa. = Ceno siempre en casa. normalmente and a veces often start the sentence: A veces nado por la mañana. Watch nunca and casi nunca. If they come AFTER the verb, no must go before the verb: No voy nunca al gimnasio. The same without no: Nunca voy al gimnasio. Both are correct, but “Voy nunca” is not. English avoids “I don't never go”, but in Spanish no … nunca is normal; just never put no and nunca side by side. How to ask: ¿Vas a menudo al gimnasio? ¿Qué haces los fines de semana? Common mistakes: • NOT “Corro nunca por la mañana” — correct: No corro nunca or Nunca corro. • NOT “Normal voy en bicicleta” — correct: Normalmente voy en bicicleta. • NOT “No nunca hago deporte” — correct: No hago deporte nunca. • NOT “Siempre no nado” — correct: Nunca nado. • NOT “Juego la guitarra” — to play an instrument is tocar: Toco la guitarra.
