Lesson 1. Now, this very minute: estar + gerundio

I can say what someone is doing right now — estoy hablando, están comiendo — and tell it apart from a habit in the present tense.

1 / 14

What's happening right now

estar + gerund

estar + gerund describes an action in progress as you speak: not in general, but now. The gerund is the -ando / -iendo form, like English -ing. Time expressions: ahora, ahora mismo, en este momento. Their opposite is the habit expression todos los días. Compare: • Estudio español. (I study Spanish — in general, every day.) • Ahora estoy estudiando español. (Right now, at this minute, I'm studying Spanish.) The forms of estar are in the table above. The gerund: -ar gives -ando (hablar → hablando), and -er and -ir give -iendo (comer → comiendo, escribir → escribiendo). If the stem of an -er or -ir verb ends in a vowel, write -yendo: leer → leyendo, oír → oyendo. In stem-changing -ir verbs, e becomes i in the gerund, whether the present has e → i (pedir → pidiendo) or e → ie (preferir → prefiriendo). Two verbs change o → u: dormir → durmiendo, morir → muriendo. Reflexive verbs have two places for the pronoun, and both are correct: me estoy duchando = estoy duchándome. Common mistakes: • NOT “Yo soy hablando” — English “I am” here is estar, not ser: estoy hablando. • NOT “Estoy hablo” and NOT “Yo estoy hablar” — correct: estoy hablando. • NOT “leiendo” — correct: leyendo. • NOT “Está comiendo todos los días” — for a habit, use the present: Come todos los días. • NOT “Estoy saliendo mañana” for a plan — correct: Salgo mañana.
