I can say where I am and where things are — Мен үйдемін, Дәріхана Абай көшесінде — and ask: Сіз қайдасыз?
Where? The ending -да: the locative
Where? The ending -да: the locative
Why: to say where you are and where things are.
English “in, at, on” come before the word; Kazakh adds an ending after it: қала → қалада “in the city”. The question is қайда? “where?”. This is the locative (жатыс септік).
Four forms (see the table):
• after a vowel and р, л, й, у, м, н, ң, з, ж — -да / -де: қалада, дүкенде;
• after a voiceless consonant and б, в, г, д — -та / -те: сабақта, сөздікте.
The word банк takes the soft form: банкте.
After the “his / her” ending (-ы, -і, -сы, -сі) it is -нда / -нде. Two-word names work this way: the first word has no ending, the second has the “his / her” ending: Алматы қаласы → Алматы қаласында, Абай көшесінде.
“I'm at home” still needs the personal ending after -де: үйдемін, үйдесіз, ол үйде. Likewise қайдасыз? “where are you?”. The familiar мұнда, онда and the new сонда “in the same place” are the same locative forms, and so is жаста: отыз жастамын.
Менде кілт бар — “I have the key on me”: кілт takes no possessive ending. For relatives, only Менің ағам бар.
Common mistakes:
• ×да Алматы → Алматыда;
• ×Мен үйде → Мен үйдемін;
• ×магазинде → дүкенде (магазин is the Russian word you will also hear);
• ×Менде аға бар → Менің ағам бар.
