← “The Master and Margarita”: Chapter by Chapter
Lesson
Lesson 1. Putting the novel together after reading
See the novel as a coherent system: the Moscow, Yershalaim, and eternal layers, the themes that run through it, and the connections of its ending.
Why do a final analysis
From chapters to the whole
After reading the novel, it is important to step back. Chapter by chapter, the events are easy to remember: Patriarch's Ponds, the Variety, the ball, the flight, Pilate's forgiveness. But the novel's meaning comes through more strongly when we see how these lines mirror one another.
In “The Master and Margarita” three linked layers are at work: the Moscow satire, the Yershalaim parable of power and conscience, and the eternal layer of judgment, forgiveness, and peace. They do not lie side by side like three separate stories: Moscow explains Yershalaim, Yershalaim judges Moscow, and the ending ties the earthly to the eternal.
In a final analysis of the novel we look not only at “who did what” but at more mature questions: why cowardice is called the chief vice, why the novel needs Woland, why the Master receives peace, how Ivan becomes the keeper of memory, and why Margarita's love turns out to be an active force.
