Lesson 2. -ere verbs: prendere, leggere, scrivere

I can conjugate -ere verbs in all six persons and tell their endings from the -are endings: prendo — parlo, ma prende — parla.

The second group: -ere verbs

The second group: -ere verbs

The second of the three Italian verb groups: verbs in -ere. Some of the most common verbs at the table and through the day follow it: prendere, leggere, scrivere, vedere. The infinitive shows the group: parlare is the first group, prendere the second. Endings: io -o, tu -i, lui/lei -e, noi -iamo, voi -ete, loro -ono. English adds only -s (she takes); Italian has an ending for every person. See the table. Half the forms sound like the -are ones: prendo — parlo, prendi — parli, prendiamo — parliamo. Exactly three differ: prende — parla, prendete — parlate, prendono — parlano. In the loro form, the stress falls on the third-to-last syllable: prèndono, lèggono, scrìvono. You can still leave out the subject. In leggo, the double gg sounds [g]; in leggi it's [dʒ]: the letters stay, the sound follows the reading rule. Prendere covers several English verbs: take, have (a coffee), order (at a bar), and take (a train), as in prendo il treno. Common mistakes: • NOT “Marco prenda un caffè” → “Marco prende un caffè” (the ending -a belongs to the first group). • NOT “Loro legge il giornale” → “Loro leggono il giornale”. • NOT “Io scrive subito” → “Io scrivo subito”. • NOT “Voi prendono un tè” → “Voi prendete un tè”.
-ere verbs: prendere, leggere

The endings are the same for all verbs of the second group.
