Lesson 2. Աշխատեցի, գնացի — the past tense (the aorist)

I can say what I did yesterday: աշխատեցի, գնացի, կարդացի — one word, no linking verb — and say what I didn't do: չգնացի.

1 / 18

What happened yesterday: գրեցի, գնացի

What happened yesterday: գրեցի, գնացի

What for: to tell what happened — what you did yesterday. The time words are the same: երեկ, երեկ երեկոյան, անցյալ շաբաթ, երկու օր առաջ. This past-tense form is called the aorist. It is one word, with no linking verb: Երեկ նամակ գրեցի. For verbs in -ել, drop -ել and add -եցի, -եցիր, -եց, -եցինք, -եցիք, -եցին: գրել → գրեցի. Verbs in -ալ take -ացի, -ացիր, -աց and so on: կարդալ → կարդացի, գնալ → գնացի. All the forms are in the table. The negative is չ joined to the verb: չգրեցի, չկարդացի. In a question nothing moves and there's no “did”: ՞ goes on the word you ask about: Որտե՞ղ աշխատեցիր. English “wrote” and “has written” are one Armenian form: գրեցի. The rule works for the verbs of this lesson. A few common verbs (հասկանալ, տեսնել, գալ, ուտել, ասել, անել, տալ) have other forms: they come in the next lesson. Common mistakes: • NOT “Ես գնացի եմ” → Ես գնացի (no linking verb). • NOT “Չեմ գնացի” → չգնացի (the negative is joined). Written ≠ heard: հագնվել — written գ, heard [kʰ].
The aorist: verbs in -ել and -ալ

One word, no linking verb. The negative: չ- at the start, joined.
