I can say which store sells what, ask for a kilo, a hundred grams, or a liter, and see a conversation with a shopkeeper through to the end.

How much, and in which store

How much, and in which store

To buy groceries, you need to say how much you want and know which store to go to. A quantity is linked to the product with di, like English “of”, and after di there's NO article: un chilo di pane, un litro di latte, un pacco di pasta (see the table). un etto is a hundred grams, mezzo chilo is half a kilo: un etto di prosciutto, mezzo chilo di formaggio. Bread — in panetteria, meat — in macelleria, ham and cheese — in salumeria, fruit and vegetables — dal fruttivendolo, a newspaper — in edicola; everything at once — al supermercato or al mercato (see the table). The salesperson starts with Desidera? and asks Altro?; the customer finishes with Basta così, grazie and Quant'è? il magazzino is not a magazine and not a store: it's a warehouse; a store is il negozio. Common mistakes: • NOT “un chilo pane” → un chilo di pane (di is always needed). • NOT “un etto del prosciutto” → un etto di prosciutto (no article after di). • NOT “Vado al magazzino a prendere il pane” → Vado in panetteria…
