I can say what I know how to do and what I don't, what I managed to do and what I didn't, and ask someone else about it.
Жүзе аламын: I can, I know how
Жүзе аламын: I can, I know how
Why: to say what you can and know how to do, what you can't do and couldn't do, and to ask about it.
How to build it. Take the present-tense form and remove the personal ending: жаза-мын → жаза, тыңдай-мын → тыңдай, оқи-мын → оқи. After it put the verb алу in the right person and tense:
• Мен жаза аламын. — I can write (I know how to write).
• Сен тыңдай аласың. Ол оқи алады.
English “can” is a separate word before the verb; Kazakh алу comes after the verb and carries all the endings.
“I can't” — the negative goes inside алу: жаза алмаймын, тыңдай алмайсыз, оқи алмайды.
The past — алу in the past tense: жаза алдым — I managed to write; оқи алмадым — I couldn't read it.
A question takes the particle at the end: Сіз жаза аласыз ба? About him or her: Ол жаза ала ма?
Мүмкін — “maybe, perhaps”; a comma follows it: Мүмкін, бүгін жаза аламын.
Common mistakes:
• דМен жүзу аламын” → жүзе аламын: not the dictionary form, although English says “can swim”.
• דМен жүземін аламын” → only алу takes the personal ending.
• דЖүзе аламын емес” → жүзе алмаймын.
The first word of the form
