I can say when something happened in the past: Als ich klein war, habe ich in Leipzig gewohnt.
Als: once in the past
Als: once in the past
The conjunction als says WHEN something happened in the past: once (als ich nach Berlin gefahren bin) or during one period of life (als ich Kind war, als ich in Hamburg gewohnt habe). als is always about the past.
English “when” is three German words: als for one time in the past, wann for a question, wenn for every time.
The form you know: after als, as after weil, wenn, and dass, the conjugated verb goes to the very end: Als ich acht Jahre alt war …
A comma always separates the two parts.
If the als clause comes first, the main clause starts with its VERB: Als Lena umgezogen ist, hat ihr der Nachbar geholfen. English puts the subject first; German says verb, comma, verb, as with weil and wenn. Both orders are in the table.
Inside the clause the verb is in the past: most often war and hatte or the Präteritum (the simple past used in written stories) of verbs you know; in the Perfekt the auxiliary goes to the end: Als ich in Berlin gearbeitet habe …
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Als ich war klein, …” — correct: Als ich klein war, …
• NOT “Als ich hatte Zeit, habe ich das Museum besucht” — correct: Als ich Zeit hatte, …
• NOT “Als ich klein war, ich habe in Leipzig gewohnt” — correct: …, habe ich in Leipzig gewohnt.
• NOT “Als meine Oma jung ist, hat sie in Leipzig gearbeitet” — it needs the past: Als meine Oma jung war, …
The als clause: two orders
There's always a comma between the parts.
| Part 1 | Part 2 | What to notice |
|---|---|---|
| Ich habe in Leipzig gewohnt, | als ich klein war. | the verb of the clause — at the very end |
| Als ich klein war, | habe ich in Leipzig gewohnt. | clause first — the main clause starts with its verb |
