Lesson 6. Кеше не істедіңіз?: the past tense

I can tell what I did yesterday and last week, say what I didn't do, ask “Бардыңыз ба?”, and explain why: “себебі …”.

1 / 17

Кеше не істедіңіз? What happened and what you did

Кеше не істедіңіз? What happened and what you did

Why: to say what you did and what happened — about things that are over and that you know firsthand. One Kazakh form covers English “I went” and “I have been”. Time words: кеше “yesterday”, өткен аптада “last week”, былтыр “last year”, жақында “recently”, бұрын “before, earlier”. The past tense (жедел өткен шақ): the stem + -ды / -ді, after voiceless consonants -ты / -ті, and a short personal ending, like the “my, your” endings (see the table): бардым, бардың, бардыңыз, барды, бардық; келдім, келдік; айттым. “We” is -қ in a hard word, -к in a soft one. For several people add -дар / -дер: бардыңдар, бардыңыздар. Stems in п, к, қ don't change: шықтық, кешіктің. “Not” is the familiar -ма / -ме, -ба / -бе, -па / -пе before -ды / -ді: бармадым, бермедім, жазбадым, айтпадым. In a question, the particle goes after the form: Көрдің бе? Ол алды ма? To ask what someone did: Не істедіңіз? “What did you do?” — you know істеу “to do” from жұмыс істеу. болды — “was, were”: Жол алыс болды. Why? — Неге? Because — себебі: Сабаққа бармадым, себебі уақытым болмады. Watch out: қала is “city”, but қалды is “stayed” (from қалу). Common mistakes: • ×бардымын → бардым; • ×Мен барды → Мен бардым.
The past tense: who did what

In a question, the particle goes after the form: Бардыңыз ба? Келдік пе?
