I can talk about what I do every day — eat, drink, learn, write, open — and get the eu forms of fazer, dar, dizer, pôr, and trazer right.

Comer, abrir — and five special verbs

Comer, abrir — and five special verbs

Two conjugations are left: -er and -ir. They match almost everywhere, so they're learned in one table. Forms: como, comes, come, comemos, comem; abro, abres, abre, abrimos, abrem. The only difference is the nós form: -emos for -er verbs and -imos for -ir verbs. The verbs viver and morar mean almost the same thing: “to live”. The verb dormir has an irregular eu form: durmo. The other forms are regular: dormes, dorme, dormimos, dormem. The first irregular -er verb is fazer: faço, fazes, faz, fazemos, fazem. Fazer anos means “to have a birthday”. The verbs dar, dizer, and trazer also have an irregular eu form: dou, digo, trago. The other forms are in the table: fazer, dizer, and trazer have a short ele form — faz, diz, traz; dar has dão for eles. The familiar Como se diz … em português? is this same verb dizer. The verb pôr stands apart: its infinitive doesn't end in -ar, -er, or -ir, and its stem is its own: ponho, pões, põe, pomos, põem. Common mistakes: • NOT “eu fazo” — faço. • NOT “eu dizo” — digo. • NOT “eu trazo” — trago. • NOT “nós abremos” — abrimos. • NOT “eu dormo” — durmo.
Presente: -er and -ir in one table

The two conjugations differ in one single form: the nós form.
