I can say who and what I have and don't have — Менің екі інім бар. Уақытым жоқ — and answer whether I'm married.
There is and there isn't: бар, жоқ
There is and there isn't: бар, жоқ
Why: to say who and what you have and don't have.
Kazakh has no verb “to have”. “I have a sister” is “my sister exists”: the word with the “my, your, his” ending + бар. You can leave out менің.
• Менің әпкем бар. — I have an older sister.
• Ініңіз бар ма? — Иә, бар.
• Уақытым жоқ. — I don't have time.
“No” as an answer and “there isn't” are one word, жоқ: Жоқ, жоқ.
How many: unlike English, after a number and after көп “many”, аз “few”, бірнеше “several” the noun stays singular: үш ұлым бар, көп кітабым бар. “A lot” and “a little” can also go without бар, after the thing: Досым көп. Ақшам аз. Ask with неше “how many”.
English “married” is one word; Kazakh has two: үйленген for a man, тұрмыста for a woman. They take the endings for “I” and “you”: Сен үйленгенсің бе? Сіз тұрмыстасыз ба?
Watch out: бар means “there is; I have” — not a bar.
Common mistakes:
• ×Мен бар аға, ×Менің аға бар → Менің ағам бар;
• ×Уақытым емес → Уақытым жоқ;
• ×Үш ұлдарым бар → Үш ұлым бар.
There is, there isn't, is there?
Answer: Иә, бар. / Жоқ, жоқ.
| Whose (can be left out) | + | − | ? |
|---|---|---|---|
| менің | үйім бар | үйім жоқ | — |
| сенің | үйің бар | үйің жоқ | Үйің бар ма? |
