Lesson 5. What you want to do: V-たいです and V-たくないです

I can say what I want and don't want to do on the weekend and on a trip, and ask the other person about it.

1 / 15

What you want to do: -たいです

What you want to do: -たいです

This lesson: how to say what you want to do on the weekend, on vacation, or tonight. The form: the verb drops ます, and たいです takes its place: のみます → のみたいです, いきます → いきたいです. After that, たい behaves like the い-adjectives of the last lessons: the negative is たくないです, the past たかったです, the past negative たくなかったです. The object of the verb takes を: すしをたべたいです. In conversation you'll also hear が, but in this course's exercises, write を. Who you say it about: yourself, and the other person in a question: なにをしたいですか. English “Tanaka-san wants to go” is normal, but Japanese doesn't state someone else's wishes like this: instead of “Tanaka-san wants to…”, say what he does. どこか is “somewhere, anywhere”, なにか is “something, anything”: どこかへいきたいです. Common mistakes: • NOT のみますたいです → のみたいです. • NOT いきたいじゃないです → いきたくないです. • NOT 田中(たなか)さんはうみへいきたいです — don't say this about someone else.
I want to: たいです

ます goes, たい comes in; after that, たい changes like an い-adjective.

What you sayいきますみます
I want toいきたいですみたいです
I don't want toいきたくないですみたくないです
I wanted toいきたかったですみたかったです
I didn't want toいきたくなかったですみたくなかったです
