I can say politely what I'd like to do — me gustaría ir al festival — and ask what someone else would like.
What would you like to do
me gustaría + infinitive
gustaría is a polite wish, “I would like”. Use it to talk about plans and to invite people.
The construction: the same pronouns as with gusta — me, te, le, nos, os, les — plus gustaría plus the infinitive: Me gustaría ir al festival. English makes “I” the subject (“I would like to go”); in Spanish the person is me, te, le… The form gustaría stays the same for every person; only the pronoun changes.
If a plural noun follows, use gustarían: Me gustarían unas vacaciones largas.
To say who, put it first: A mí me gustaría…, A Lucía le gustaría…
The infinitive comes right after gustaría, with no word for “to”. A reflexive verb changes its pronoun to match the person: Me gustaría quedarme en casa. Nos gustaría quedarnos en casa.
The accent mark in gustaría is there because í and a are said separately, as two syllables — as in día and María.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Yo gustaría ir” — correct: Me gustaría ir.
• NOT “A Miguel gustaría venir” — correct: A Miguel le gustaría venir.
• NOT “Me gustaría a ir” — correct: Me gustaría ir.
• NOT “Me gustaría voy al cine” — correct: Me gustaría ir al cine.
• NOT “Me gustarías ir” — correct: Me gustaría ir.
• NOT “Me gustaría quedarse en casa” — correct: Me gustaría quedarme en casa.
gustaría stays the same for every person
Only the pronoun before gustaría changes — the form itself stays the same.
| To whom | Pronoun | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a mí | me | Me gustaría descansar el domingo. |
| a ti | te | ¿Te gustaría salir esta noche? |
| a él · a ella · a usted | le | Le gustaría estudiar en Madrid. |
| a nosotros · a nosotras | nos | Nos gustaría hablar con Ana. |
| a vosotros · a vosotras | os | ¿Os gustaría leer este libro? |
| a ellos · a ellas · a ustedes | les | Les gustaría dormir hasta las once. |
