1 / 17

Мен дәрігермін: who I am, who you are

Мен дәрігермін: who I am, who you are

Why: to say who you are and who you're talking to — “I'm a doctor”, “you're a teacher”. Pronouns: мен — I, сен — you (informal), сіз — you (one person, formally), ол — he, she, it, біз — we, сендер — you (several people, informal), сіздер — you (several people, formally), олар — they. English says “I'm a doctor” with “am” and “a”. Kazakh has no word for either: it adds a personal ending to the word дәрігер “doctor”: • мен: -мын / -мін — after vowels and р, л, й, у, м, н, ң; -бын / -бін — after з, ж; -пын / -пін — after voiceless consonants and б, в, г, д; • сен: -сың / -сің; • сіз: -сыз / -сіз. The last syllable decides between the hard and the soft form: оқушы → оқушымын, дәрігер → дәрігермін, аспаз → аспазбын, студент → студентпін. The third person has no ending: Ол — дәрігер. In writing, a dash goes before the noun. For several people you can say both Олар — дәрігер and Олар — дәрігерлер. The personal ending is unstressed: the stress stays on the last syllable of the word itself. You can leave out the pronoun — the ending shows the person: Дәрігермін. Common mistakes: • ×Мен дәрігер → Мен дәрігермін; • ×Ол дәрігермін → Ол — дәрігер; • ×Сіз мұғалім → Сіз мұғалімсіз.
