I can say hello and choose tu or vous, give my name and ask someone's, say who I am and where I'm from, and write down a phone number.
What we review
What we review
There's no new theory in this lesson — we review four things from the module.
First: choosing tu or vous, and the lines of a first meeting — hello, goodbye, thanks, apologies, and asking someone to repeat.
Second: the eight subject pronouns and the four introduction phrases — je m'appelle, tu t'appelles, vous vous appelez, il / elle s'appelle.
Third: the verb être in all six persons, with no article before a job or a nationality, and nationalities in the masculine and the feminine (français — française). The forms are in the table.
Fourth: counting to 69 (the second table; the 1 is joined with et) and phone numbers in pairs.
The verb être in the present tense
In vous êtes there's a liaison: it's pronounced [vuzɛt].
| Pronoun | Form |
|---|---|
| je | suis |
| tu | es |
| il / elle | est |
| nous | sommes |
| vous | êtes |
| ils / elles | sont |
How numbers from 21 to 69 are built
The word et appears only where the last digit is 1.
| Number | How it's built | Word |
|---|---|---|
| 21 | 20 + et + 1 | vingt et un |
| 22 | 20 + 2, with a hyphen | vingt-deux |
| 31 | 30 + et + 1 | trente et un |
| 45 | 40 + 5 | quarante-cinq |
| 61 | 60 + et + 1 | soixante et un |
| 69 | 60 + 9 | soixante-neuf |
