I can say where I live, what I do, and what language I speak, ask the same with ty and with vy — hovoríš / hovoríte — and ask: “Nerozumiem. Hovorte pomaly, prosím”.
Hovorím, hovoríš, hovoríte
Hovorím, hovoríš, hovoríte
Why: to talk about yourself and ask the other person where they live, what they do, and what language they speak.
The ending shows the person: “I” -m, “you” (ty) -š, “you” (vy) -te: hovorím, hovoríš, hovoríte. Som ends in -m too.
Take the ja form from the dictionary (in parentheses after the word: pracovať (pracujem)), then change only the end: pracujem → pracuješ → pracujete.
To a friend, -š (Eva, bývaš v Moskve?); to pani or pán, -te (Pani Šimková, bývate v Moskve?).
“Not” is joined to the verb: nerozumiem, nehovoríš, neviem. Only byť keeps it apart: nie som.
Languages: po slovensky, po rusky (English “speak Slovak” is hovoriť po slovensky); slovenčina, ruština are the names of the languages. Both are lowercase, unlike English “Slovak”, “Russian”.
Where you live: Bývam v Bratislave. Bývam v Moskve. Learn these as a whole.
A long syllable isn't stressed: in hovorím the stress is on ho-.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Ne rozumiem.” → Nerozumiem. (one word)
• NOT “Pán Varga, rozumieš?” → Pán Varga, rozumiete?
• NOT “Hovorím slovenčina.” → Hovorím po slovensky.
Ja, ty, vy: -m, -š, -te
Take the ja form from the dictionary, then change only the ending.
| Verb | ja (-m) | ty (-š) | vy (-te) |
|---|---|---|---|
| hovoriť | hovorím | hovoríš | hovoríte |
| rozumieť | rozumiem | rozumieš | rozumiete |
| vedieť | viem | vieš | viete |
| bývať | bývam | bývaš | bývate |
| pracovať | pracujem | pracuješ | pracujete |
| študovať | študujem | študuješ | študujete |

Nerozumiem: what to say when you don't understand
These phrases save any conversation: learn them as a whole (see the table).
Hovorte pomaly is a request, “speak slowly”; hovoríte is a question, “do you speak?”. Don't mix them up.
Otázka is a question, odpoveď an answer. Odpoveď is feminine although it ends in a consonant: the dictionary marks it.
