Lesson 4. Сіз қазақсыз ба?: the question particle ма and the negative емес
I can ask “Are you a doctor?”, answer “yes” or “no, I'm not a doctor”, and say where I'm from.
Questions with a particle, and the negative емес
Questions with a particle, and the negative емес
Why: to ask a yes-or-no question and say “I'm not …”.
Questions. Keep the word order (no “are you”, no “do”) and put the question particle after the predicate, as a separate word (see the table):
• ма / ме — after vowels and р, л, й, у: оқушы ма? дәрігер ме?
• ба / бе — after м, н, ң, з, ж: дайын ба? мұғалім бе?
• па / пе — after voiceless consonants and б, в, г, д: қазақ па? студент пе?
The hard or the soft form: the last syllable decides. The particle is unstressed: the voice stresses the word before it. If the question already has кім, there is no particle: Бұл кім?
“Not” is the word емес after the predicate; the personal ending moves onto it: мен … емеспін, сен … емессің, сіз … емессіз, ол … емес.
• Қазақсыз ба? — Иә, қазақпын. / Жоқ, қазақ емеспін, орыспын.
To ask back: Ал сіз ше? “And you?”
Who and where from: Анна — орыс. Ресей — ел, Мәскеу — қала. “Where are you from?” is a set pair: Қайдансыз? — Мен Америкаданмын “I'm from America”.
Right or wrong: Дұрыс па? — Жоқ, бұрыс.
Watch out: ал means “and, but” at the start of a reply. Both ал and қала also have other meanings, which come later.
Common mistakes:
• ×Иван ба студент? → Иван студент пе?
• ×Сен дайынсыңба? → Сен дайынсың ба?
• ×Сіздің атыңыз кім бе? → Сіздің атыңыз кім?
• ×Мен дәрігер жоқ → Дәрігер емеспін.
The question particle: three rows
After the endings -сың, -сыз, always ба; after -сің, -сіз, always бе.
| The word before the particle ends in… | Particle | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| a vowel; р, л, й, у | ма / ме | оқушы ма? дәрігер ме? |
| м, н, ң, з, ж | ба / бе | дайын ба? мұғалім бе? |
| voiceless; б, в, г, д | па / пе | қазақ па? студент пе? |
The negative: емес and the personal ending
The personal ending moves onto емес.
| Who | not … |
|---|---|
| мен | емеспін |
| сен | емессің |
| сіз | емессіз |
| ол | емес |
