I can understand post office and bank hours, say at what time, after what, and about what or whom, name sums from a hundred into the thousands, and address an envelope correctly.
Kedy, o čom a koľko: the locative at the post office and the bank
Kedy, o čom a koľko: the locative at the post office and the bank
At the post office and the bank you hear when it's open, what it's about, and how much it costs. For this you need the locative, which you know from “where?”: the same endings — -e, -i, -u on nouns, -om, -ej on adjectives.
• o + the hour — at what time: o ôsmej, o pol deviatej.
• od … do — from what time to what time: od deviatej do piatej.
• po + the locative — after what: po práci, po prednáške.
• o + the locative — about what, about whom: o tvojej škole, o dobrom hoteli.
For me, you, and us, use set forms: o mne, o tebe, o nás, o vás. O nás (about us) and náš (our) differ only by the mark: choose by the meaning.
Hundreds are built on sto: dvesto, tristo … deväťsto; a thousand is tisíc, dvetisíc. The number is one word: tristopäťdesiat. From five up it's eur, as in päť eur: štyristo eur, tisíc eur.
Na poštu — where to, na pošte — where. List is a letter (and a sheet of paper). Účet is the check in a café and an account in a bank. The address on an envelope: name, street and house number, postcode and city; in a US address the ZIP code comes after the city and state. The table is next to this text.
Common mistakes:
• ×od deväť do päť → od deviatej do piatej
• ×o nová škola → o novej škole
• ×päť sto eur → päťsto eur
• ×811 08 Bratislava, Dunajská 8 → Dunajská 8, 811 08 Bratislava
When and about what: o, po, od … do
After o and po comes the locative: the same endings as after v and na for “where?”.
| Preposition | Question | Example |
|---|---|---|
| o + the hour | at what time? | o ôsmej |
| od … do | from what time to what time? | od deviatej do piatej |
| po + the locative | after what? | po práci, po prednáške |
| o + the locative | about what? about whom? | o tvojej škole, o dobrom hoteli |
| set forms | about whom? | o mne, o tebe, o nás, o vás |
Hundreds and thousands
The number is written as one word: 350 — tristopäťdesiat.
| Number | In words |
|---|---|
| 100 | sto |
| 200 | dvesto |
| 300 | tristo |
| 400 | štyristo |
| 500 | päťsto |
| 600 | šesťsto |
| 700 | sedemsto |
| 800 | osemsto |
| 900 | deväťsto |
| 1 000 | tisíc |
| 2 000 | dvetisíc |
The address on an envelope
The postcode (PSČ) goes before the city, on the same line: 811 08 Bratislava; in a US address the ZIP code comes after the city and state.
| Line | What goes there | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | first and last name | Katarína Šimková |
| 2 | street and house number | Dunajská 8 |
| 3 | postcode (PSČ) and city | 811 08 Bratislava |
