Lesson 1. Ապրում եմ, աշխատում եմ — the present tense

I can say what I usually do and what I'm doing right now: live, work, study, read, write — in any person, with the words “now”, “today”, “every day”, and “often”.

1 / 18

The present tense: գրում եմ

The present tense: գրում եմ

Armenian has one present tense for “I work” and “I'm working”: Մենք սովորում ենք is “we study” (in general) and “we're studying now”. Helpful words: հիմա — now, այսօր — today, ամեն օր — every day; how often — միշտ, հաճախ, երբեմն (all the words are in the table). The dictionary form of a verb is the infinitive, ending in -ել or -ալ: գրել — to write, կարդալ — to read. “I write” in Armenian is two words: the -ում form and the linking verb. Replace the infinitive ending with -ում: գրել → գրում, կարդալ → կարդում. This form never changes. The linking verb shows who does it, the same one you know from “Ուսանող եմ”: գրում եմ, գրում ես, գրում է, գրում ենք, գրում եք, գրում են. In a plain statement the linking verb comes right after the -ում form. You can leave out the pronoun: Աշխատում եմ — I work. Common mistakes: • NOT “Նրանք լսում” → Նրանք լսում են (no linking verb, no sentence). • NOT “գրելում եմ” → գրում եմ (the -ել ending doesn't stay). It's written differently from how it sounds: in կարդալ you write դ but hear [tʰ]; in երբեմն you write բ but hear [pʰ].
The present tense: the -ում form + the linking verb

The -ում form is the same for every person; only the linking verb changes.
