In the store: size, trying on, exchanges

In the store: size, trying on, exchanges

The first table shows the six steps: from finding your size to an exchange or a refund. Size: la taille for clothes, but la pointure for shoes (English says “size” for both). The answer is a set phrase: Je fais du 38. Learn it whole. Trying on: Je voudrais l'essayer, s'il vous plaît. Or: Est-ce que je peux l'essayer ? No word for “on”. The fitting room is la cabine d'essayage. The fit: too small is trop serré, too big is trop large (for a feminine item: trop serrée). “It suits you” uses aller: Ça vous va très bien. Cette robe ne me va pas. You pay à la caisse and get le ticket de caisse: no receipt, no exchange. Electronics and shoes have la garantie (a warranty). During les soldes (the sales) prices drop; the word is always plural. Exchanges and refunds: one item for another is échanger (échanger une veste contre une autre); the store gives the money back: rembourser; the customer gives the item back: rendre. Common mistakes: • NOT “Quelle est votre taille de chaussures ?” — shoes have their own word: la pointure. • NOT “Je veux essayer ce pull” — too blunt; use je voudrais. • NOT “Ce pull est petit pour moi” — for the fit, trop serré or trop large; for the size, plus grand or plus petit. • NOT “Rendez-moi l'argent” — the store refunds you: rembourser. • NOT “Je fais le 38” — the phrase only takes du.
