Lesson 5. Questo o quello? Pointing at things; the apartment

I can point at things near and far — questo, quest', quel, quello, quell', quei, quegli — say “here” and “there”, and choose an apartment and explain why.

This and that: questo and quello

This and that: questo and quello

To point at things near and far, choose between two, and say why, you need questo and quello. Questo (this) is near: qui, qua; quello (that) is farther away: lì, là. The forms agree with the noun in gender and number: questo, questa, questi, queste. Before a vowel in the singular, it's quest': quest'anno, quest'appartamento. Quello changes like the definite article: quel (il), quello (lo, z, s + consonant), quell' (before a vowel), quella (la), quei (i), quegli (gli), quelle (le). See the table. Without a noun, in the singular, they stand alone: Prendo questo. Prendo quello. Qui and qua mean the same, and so do lì and là; both words of each pair are accepted in answers. Là (there) and la (the article) differ only in the accent mark: this pair is checked only by choice, not in writing. To explain a choice, use perché: Prendo quell'appartamento perché è luminoso. In Italy, the floor at street level is il piano terra, so il primo piano is already the second floor in a US building. In an ad, “terzo piano” means the fourth floor in the US. Common mistakes: • NOT “quello tavolo” → quel tavolo. • NOT “quelli studenti” → quegli studenti. • NOT “questo casa” → questa casa. • NOT “quello armadio” → quell'armadio.
Questo and quello

Qui / qua (here) go with questo; lì / là (there) go with quello.
