I can point to a thing (이 / 그 / 저), say where it is (에 있어요, 도), what I do (을 / 를, the -요 form) and where (에서), and I don't mix up 에 and 에서.

What we review
What we review:
• 이 / 그 / 저: near me, near you, far away (English “that” covers both 그 and 저). With a noun 이 책, without a noun 이것, a place 여기.
• Where: thing — position word — 에 — 있어요; 도 instead of 은 / 는 and 이 / 가.
• What I do: 을 after a 받침, 를 after a vowel; what there is: 이 after a 받침, 가 after a vowel; the predicate goes at the end.
• The -요 form: -아요 after ㅏ and ㅗ, -어요 after other vowels, the vowels merge, ㅡ drops, 하다 → 해요.
에 or 에서: look at the verb, not at English “in, at, to”:
• 에 — where something is: with 있어요 and 없어요;
• 에 — where to: with 가다, 오다, 다니다;
• 에서 — where something is done: with 공부하다, 읽다, 배우다, 쓰다 and other actions.
See the table.
Common mistakes:
• ×교실에서 있어요 → 교실에 있어요.
• ×집에 운동해요 → 집에서 운동해요.
에 or 에서
Look at the verb.
| Particle | When | With which verbs | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 에 | where something is | 있어요, 없어요 | 방에 있어요 |
| 에 | where to | 가다, 오다, 다니다 | 집에 가요 |
| 에서 | where something is done | 공부하다, 읽다, 배우다, 쓰다 and other actions | 집에서 읽어요 |
The -요 form: -아요 or -어요
Look at the last vowel of the stem and whether there's a 받침.
| Stem | What happens | Examples |
|---|---|---|
