Lesson 4. Ontem, hoje, amanhã: time expressions, sequence words, and a first story

I can talk about yesterday in four or five sentences in a row: put events in order with primeiro, depois, a seguir, então, and no fim, and answer the question O que é que fizeste ontem?

Telling it in order: primeiro, depois, no fim

Telling it in order: primeiro, depois, no fim

Separate sentences aren't a story yet. A story rests on two things: a time word at the start and a linking word between events. The timeline: anteontem and ontem take the past, hoje the present, amanhã and depois de amanhã vou or vamos + infinitive. You hear the time in the ending: estudei yesterday, estudo today. Sequence words: primeiro, a seguir, depois, então, no fim. They go at the start of the sentence; the familiar e, mas, and porque work as before. Here primeiro means “first”, as in “first I studied”, and goes before the verb. “The first day”, “the second time” come at the next level. Acabei de chegar means “I've just arrived”: the familiar acabar de, put in the past. How do you answer O que é que fizeste ontem? Say the day, then the first event, then the second, then how it all ended. Example: Ontem acordei às oito. Primeiro estudei em casa, a seguir telefonei ao Rui. No fim jantei com a família. Another example: No sábado passado não trabalhei. Primeiro fui ao jardim, depois li um livro e então passei a tarde em casa. Common mistakes: • NOT “Ontem vou ao cinema” — Ontem fui ao cinema. • NOT “Amanhã falei com o Rui” — Amanhã vou falar com o Rui. • NOT “Eu primeiro acordo e depois estudei” — one story, one tense. Now you can talk about your own yesterday.
