Lesson 2. Opinions, judgments, character, and exclamations

I can give an opinion and react to someone else's — agree or disagree, describe a person's character, and exclaim “Quel beau jardin !” and “Comme c'est joli !”.

Je pense que… : opinions, agreement, and exclamations

Je pense que… : opinions, agreement, and exclamations

Giving and reacting to opinions is two thirds of the DELF A2 speaking test. Three equal set phrases, each followed by an ordinary sentence: À mon avis, Je pense que, Je trouve que. After À mon avis there is NO que. Agreement is a scale: Je suis tout à fait d'accord · Je suis d'accord · Je ne suis pas d'accord · Je ne suis pas du tout d'accord. With a person: d'accord avec + a stressed pronoun (avec toi). English says “I'm right” and “you're wrong”; French uses avoir, not être: j'ai raison, tu as tort. Exclamations use three structures: Quel + a noun, with no article (unlike English “What a…!”); quel, quelle, quels, or quelles agrees with it. Comme or Que + a full sentence in normal word order. Intensifiers: très, vraiment, trop; même (“even”) goes right before the word it refers to: Léa lit ce journal même le dimanche. Character: sympa doesn't change in the feminine (une collègue sympa) but takes s in the plural; gentil — gentille (double ll and e), généreux — généreuse, bavard — bavarde; timide and égoïste are the same in the masculine and the feminine. Common mistakes: • NOT “Je suis raison” → “J'ai raison”. • NOT “Je suis d'accord avec tu” → “Je suis d'accord avec toi”. • NOT “À mon avis que c'est difficile” → “À mon avis, c'est difficile”. • NOT “Quelle beau film !” → “Quel beau film !” • NOT “Comme est-elle sympa !” → “Comme elle est sympa !”
