Forms and addresses

Forms and addresses

Why: to fill in a form, give your address, read an ATM screen, and ask a landlord about an apartment. form means a form to fill in, as in English. On the form, the first name comes first, then the last name: Adı — İvan, Soyadı — Smirnov. Many last names end in -oğlu (“son”), for example Eroğlu. Date of birth is doğum tarihi, signature is imza. All the fields are in the table. A Turkish address goes from the neighborhood down, and the number comes after the street: mahalle (neighborhood), sokak (street), the building number (No), the floor (kat), the apartment (daire), and at the end the district and the city. The floor is an ordinal number: ikinci kat, written “2. kat”; the building and apartment numbers are plain numbers: numara on, daire altı. Money: dolar, avro, lira. On an ATM the Para çekme button means “withdraw cash” (from para çekmek, “to withdraw money”). In a passport: vize, a visa. Housing: kira is the rent, ev sahibi the landlord or landlady. Common mistakes: • NOT “Adı: Smirnov, Soyadı: İvan” → Adı: İvan, Soyadı: Smirnov • NOT “beşinci Mayıs” → beş Mayıs • NOT “kat ikinci” → ikinci kat
