Forms, the phone, and “I didn't understand”

To fill in a form, give your details, and keep up when people speak fast, you need the fields of a form, phone numbers, and a few set phrases. On a form, nome comes first, then cognome: first name before last name, as in English. nazionalità is lowercase, unlike English: italiana, russa. The address: first the street, then the house number — Via Dante, 8. The CAP (ZIP code) comes BEFORE the city: 00185 Roma. Write the year of birth in figures. la firma is the signature at the bottom of the form, not a firm. On the phone: answer with Pronto?; introduce yourself with Sono Marco; ask C'è Giulia?; promise Richiamo giovedì. Double consonants are held longer: messaggio, indirizzo. When you don't understand, set phrases help: Non ho capito, Può ripetere, per favore?, Come, scusi?, Più lentamente, per favore, Come si scrive?, Come si dice … in italiano?, Che cosa significa …?, Scusi, non parlo bene l'italiano. Spell out a last name letter by letter: Come si scrive? — E-S-P-O-S-I-T-O. Common mistakes: • NOT “Pronto, questo è Marco” → Pronto? Sono Marco. • NOT “Roma 00185” on a form → 00185 Roma. • NOT “Pronto, chi sei?” to a stranger → Pronto? Sono Marco.
