What the text is about

In a moment you'll read a short biography — the story of a person's life. Texts like this appear in magazines and online, and they're written in the Präteritum (the simple past used in written stories): kam, war, hatte, arbeitete, zeigte. Marie Hoffmann is a photographer; she started taking pictures back in school, and success didn't come right away. Two phrases to help you read: “Am Anfang war es schwer” — at first it was hard; “Danach war Marie berühmt” — after that, Marie was famous.
