Ik ben vierendertig: numbers up to a thousand

Ik ben vierendertig: numbers up to a thousand

Why: to say your age, a house number, a number above twenty. The tens are in the table. Three change the stem: dertig, veertig, tachtig. Don't mix them up by ear: dertien — 13, dertig — 30; zeventien — 17, zeventig — 70. A compound number is written as one word, and the ones come first, joined by en: “one and twenty” — eenentwintig, “four and thirty” — vierendertig. If three vowels meet at the join, the e gets a trema: tweeëntwintig, drieëndertig. You don't have to type the trema: the answer still counts. Hundreds and thousands take no een: honderd, tweehonderd, duizend; 105 — honderdvijf, 250 — tweehonderdvijftig. Age is said with zijn: Ik ben vierendertig. Hoe oud ben je? You can add jaar; after a number it doesn't change: vijf jaar. Common mistakes: • ×twintigeen, ×een en twintig → eenentwintig; • ×Mij is 34 → Ik ben 34; ×Ik heb 34 jaar → Ik ben 34 jaar.
