Lesson 2. I would…: condicional simple

I can ask politely, give advice, and daydream with the “would” form: ¿Podrías ayudarme?, Deberías descansar, Yo que tú hablaría con Teresa.

The “would” form

Condicional simple (the conditional) — politeness, advice, and dreams

The conditional (condicional) is the Spanish “would”. At A2 it has three uses. Polite requests: ¿Podrías ayudarme? — softer than ¿Puedes ayudarme? English “Could you…?” is this form, never the past pudiste. Also: ¿Sería posible cambiar la hora? Advice: Deberías dormir más horas (“you should”). Yo que tú hablaría con el médico (“If I were you, I'd…”; en tu lugar means the same). Wishes and dreams: Viviría cerca de un río. The familiar me gustaría belongs to the same family. The forms are in the first table: the endings -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían go on the whole infinitive, as in the future tense. The accent mark on í is in ALL six forms, nosotros too: hablaríamos (the future tense has none there: hablaremos). The irregular stems are the same as in the future tense (second table): six you know — tendr-, podr-, saldr-, vendr-, sabr-, har-; three are new: dir- (decir), pondr- (poner), and querr- (querer). They work in the future too: diré, pondré, querré. The stem change does not happen here: volver → volvería, empezar → empezaría. Common mistakes: • NOT “Yo que tú voy al médico” — correct: Yo que tú iría al médico. • NOT “hacería” — correct: haría. • NOT “tenería” — correct: tendría. • NOT “hablariamos” — correct: hablaríamos. • NOT “Deberías descansas” and NOT “Deberías a descansar” — correct: Deberías descansar.
Condicional (the conditional): the ending goes on the whole infinitive

One ending for all three conjugations. The í has an accent mark in all six forms — nosotros too.
