I can name the day of the week and the month, say the date, and say when my birthday is; I can tell “on Mondays” from “this Monday”.
Days, months, and the date
Days, months, and the date
To make an appointment and give a date, you need the days of the week and the months.
Five days are feminine, and each has a hyphen: a segunda-feira, a terça-feira, a quarta-feira, a quinta-feira, a sexta-feira. Saturday and Sunday are masculine: o sábado, o domingo. Unlike English, days and months are written in lowercase.
“À segunda-feira”, “ao sábado” mean “on Mondays”, “on Saturdays”: every week. “Na segunda-feira”, “no sábado” mean “on Monday”, “on Saturday”: one particular day.
A month takes em: “em maio”. The day takes de, and it comes first: “doze de outubro”. The full date is “doze de outubro de 2026”; reading and writing the year comes later. For a day of the month, say “no dia cinco”; if a date just falls on a Sunday and the day isn't set yet, “é num domingo”; for a day already known, “no domingo”.
“Quando é o teu aniversário?” — “É a cinco de março”. The first of the month is a plain number too: “um de janeiro”, not “primeiro”.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Trabalho em a segunda-feira” → “na segunda-feira”: the preposition joins the article.
• NOT “O meu aniversário é a primeiro de junho” → “a um de junho”.
• NOT “Hoje é Segunda-feira” → “segunda-feira”, in lowercase.
• NOT “doze outubro” → “doze de outubro”: a date needs de.
Days of the week: “on Tuesdays” and “on Tuesday”
Days of the week are written in lowercase; five of them are feminine and have a hyphen, while Saturday and Sunday are masculine.
| Day of the week | On …s (every week) | On … (just once) |
|---|---|---|
| a segunda-feira | à segunda-feira | na segunda-feira |
| a terça-feira | à terça-feira | na terça-feira |
