Lesson 5. Ո՞ւր ես գնում — գալիս եմ, գնում եմ, and “where to”

I can say where I'm going and when I come and get back: “I'm going home”, “I'm going to work”, “I come early” — and ask “where are you going?”

1 / 16

Where to: Ո՞ւր ես գնում

Where to: Ո՞ւր ես գնում

Ո՞ւր — where to, որտե՞ղ — where: Ո՞ւր ես գնում — where are you going? English uses one “where” for both; Armenian asks two different questions, so don't mix them up. The word that answers “where to” takes no ending (there is no word for “to”), and the linking verb comes right after it: Տուն եմ գնում — I'm going home. Մոսկվա ենք գնում — we're going to Moscow. Compare: Երևանում եմ ապրում (where) — Երևան եմ գնում (where to). Two set phrases: աշխատանքի եմ գնում — I'm going to work, դասի եմ գնում — I'm going to class. For the verbs գալ and տալ, the present form ends in -իս, not -ում: գալ → գալիս եմ — I come (here); տալ → տալիս եմ — I give. Everything else works as usual: չեմ գալիս, Ե՞րբ ես գալիս. In a two-word verb, the linking verb in a plain statement comes after the first word: դուրս եմ գալիս — I go out, դուրս չեմ գալիս — I don't go out. Common mistakes: • NOT “Երևանում եմ գնում” → Երևան եմ գնում (-ում means “in”). • NOT “գալում եմ” → գալիս եմ.
Two verbs in -իս

These two verbs are special; գնալ is like all the others: գնում եմ.

Where to
