I can name vegetables and fruit, ask the price per kilo, say “it's expensive”, ask for something cheaper, bigger, or smaller, say “I'll take this”, and answer the seller about a bag and change.
At the market and in the store: price, weight, “something cheaper”
At the market and in the store: price, weight, “something cheaper”
At the market and in a store you use դուք. You ask the price with the familiar Ի՞նչ արժե, and the answer is usually per kilo: Կիլոգրամը հազար դրամ է. In speech you'll hear կիլո for կիլոգրամ.
A request goes like this: number + measure + the word with no ending + տվեք. There is no “of” and no plural: Երկու կիլոգրամ վարունգ տվեք — “Give me two kilos of cucumbers.” Կես կիլոգրամ — half a kilo.
If it isn't right, there are three set phrases; learn them as a whole: ավելի էժան — cheaper, ավելի մեծ — bigger, ավելի փոքր — smaller. Ավելի էժան կա՞ — “Is there anything cheaper?” Don't combine ավելի with other words yet.
When you've decided: Սա եմ վերցնում, “I'll take this.” The seller will ask Էլ ի՞նչ եք ուզում — “Anything else?”, Տոպրակ պե՞տք է — “Do you need a bag?”, Մանր ունե՞ք — “Do you have small change?” (when the seller can't give change).
Կանաչի — herbs, կանաչ — green. Դեղձ — peach; written ղ and ձ, heard [χ] and [tsʰ]. Սխտոր — garlic.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “երկու կիլոգրամ վարունգի” → երկու կիլոգրամ վարունգ (after a measure the word doesn't change: no “of”).
• NOT “հինգ խնձորներ” → հինգ խնձոր (no plural after a number).
At the market, step by step
On the left are your lines; on the right is what you'll hear from the seller.
| Step | You say | You hear |
|---|---|---|
| price | Խնձորն ի՞նչ արժե։ | Կիլոգրամը հազար դրամ է։ |
| weight | Երկու կիլոգրամ վարունգ տվեք։ | Խնդրեմ։ |
| you've decided | Սա եմ վերցնում։ | Էլ ի՞նչ եք ուզում։ |
| bag | Այո, տվեք։ | Տոպրակ պե՞տք է։ |
| payment | Ահա հազար դրամ։ | Մանր ունե՞ք։ |
Three set phrases
Learn them as a whole; don't combine ավելի with other words yet.
| Phrase | Translation | How to ask |
|---|---|---|
| ավելի էժան | something cheaper | Ավելի էժան կա՞։ |
| ավելի մեծ | something bigger | Ավելի մեծ կա՞։ |
| ավելի փոքր | something smaller | Ավելի փոքր կա՞։ |
