Empty space works when it's on the right side

Empty space in the frame isn't a loss — it's a tool. But it has to sit where the person is facing: where they're looking, where their body is turned, where they're walking. Room in front of the person reads as the motion continuing. The same room behind their back reads as a cropping mistake: it looks as if the photographer just didn't finish turning the camera in time.
