Lesson

Breakdown: what happens and what it means

Understand what town lies beyond the tunnel, why the parents turned into pigs, and what the motif of food and greed means.

1 / 5

The town that comes alive at dusk

Not a park but a bathhouse for the gods

Beyond the tunnel are narrow streets with closed eateries, little bridges, and red lanterns. The father thinks it's an abandoned “amusement park” from the 1990s (Japan really did build and abandon such parks then). But it isn't a park. It's a resort town for spirits — yokai and kami (Shinto deities), who come here to rest and bathe in the bathhouse. While it's still light, the town seems empty. The parents follow a smell and find a counter piled with food and no seller. Despite Chihiro's protests, they sit down and start eating greedily. Chihiro wanders off to look around — and on a bridge she meets a boy, Haku, who, horrified, tells her to leave at once, before sunset. But it's already getting dark. The lanterns light up, and translucent shadow spirits appear. Chihiro runs back to her parents — and doesn't recognize them: in their place are two huge pigs. They stuffed themselves and turned into livestock.
