Lesson 1. Սրճարանում — at a café

I can get a table, order Armenian coffee with or without sugar, ask for more and for something to go, ask for the check, say how I'm paying, ask for the Wi-Fi password, and recognize the spoken “yes”, “no”, and “thank you”.

At a café: a table, the order, the check

In a café you speak to the waiter with դուք. To ask about a table: Ազատ սեղան կա՞, “Is there a free table?” To order, use the familiar Ինձ … բերեք, խնդրում եմ. “One more” is մի … էլ: էլ goes after the thing you ask for. Մի սուրճ էլ բերեք — “Bring one more coffee.” Հայկական սուրճ is brewed in a small pot with the sugar already in, so you're asked about sugar right away. Քաղցր — sweet, առանց շաքարի — without sugar. “To go” is ինձ հետ, literally “with me” (for us: մեզ հետ). The waiter asks Ձեզ հետ, “to go?” There are two ways to pay. Կանխիկ — in cash, քարտով — by card. Գաղտնաբառ — password. In Yerevan you'll hear spoken words: they're in the second table. Recognize them, but say and write the words of its second column yourself. Կներեք isn't slang: it's an ordinary polite form, as common in writing as ներեցեք and more common in speech. Ապրես (to a friend) and Ապրեք (formal) — a warm spoken “thanks”. Common mistakes: • NOT “դեռ մի սուրճ” → մի սուրճ էլ (դեռ means “still, yet”, not “one more”). • NOT “առանց շաքար” → առանց շաքարի. • NOT “Ինձ համար” for “to go” → Ինձ հետ.
