Lesson 1. Իմ ընտանիքը — the family and the words իմ, քո, նրա, մեր, ձեր, նրանց
I can name family members and say whose brother, house, or child it is: իմ, քո, նրա, մեր, ձեր, նրանց — and a word with the article.
Whose? Իմ, քո, նրա, մեր, ձեր, նրանց
Whose? Իմ, քո, նրա, մեր, ձեր, նրանց
What for: to introduce your family: “this is my brother”, “our mom is a doctor”.
The six possessives come before the noun and never change: իմ (my), քո (your, informal), նրա (his, her), մեր (our), ձեր (your, formal or plural), նրանց (their).
Unlike English, the noun after them takes the article: իմ եղբայրը, մեր տղան. Before the linking verb է, after a consonant the article is -ն: Սա իմ եղբայրն է։ Before չէ it is -ը: Նա իմ եղբայրը չէ։ The phrases you know, “Իմ անունը…” and “Սա իմ գիրքն է”, work the same way.
Formally, to one person: Ձեր, with a capital: Ձեր տունը.
The family words are in the tables. Remember:
• պապիկ means grandpa, not dad; dad is հայրիկ;
• ծնողներ, “parents”, means two people, so the linking verb is են;
• որդի, դուստր are words for forms and documents; in conversation a son and a daughter are տղա, աղջիկ;
• uncles and aunts on the father's and the mother's side have different words.
Written ≠ heard: եղբայր — written ղ and բ, heard [χ] and [pʰ]; որդի — written դ, heard [tʰ].
Common mistakes:
• NOT “իմ եղբայր” → իմ եղբայրը (after a possessive, the article).
• NOT “Սա իմ եղբայրը է” → Սա իմ եղբայրն է։
• NOT “նա մայրը” for “his mother” → նրա մայրը.
Six possessives
The possessive doesn't change; the noun after it takes the article.
| Who | Whose | Example |

| ես — I | իմ — my | իմ թոռը — my grandson |
| դու — you (informal) | քո — your (informal) | քո հայրը — your father |

| դուք — you (formal or plural) | ձեր — your (formal or plural) | ձեր դուստրը — your daughter |
| նրանք — they | նրանց — their | նրանց հայրիկը — their dad |
