What you like: gustar and its family

Verbs like gustar

These verbs say what you like, love, or find interesting, and what something seems like — and let you react to someone's opinion. The structure is unusual: the subject is not the person but the THING that is liked. The person comes first as a pronoun: me, te, le, nos, os, les (table above). There are two forms. One thing or an action — gusta: Me gusta el arte. Me gusta bailar. Several things — gustan: Me gustan los idiomas. encantar and interesar work the same way: Me encanta la música. Me interesan los museos. English “I'm interested in museums” is just Me interesan los museos. parecer has the forms parece and parecen: Me parece interesante. encantar already means “like a lot”, so mucho does not go with it. Reacting to an opinion: • — Me gusta el cine. — A mí también. / A mí no. • — No me gusta el cine. — A mí tampoco. / A mí sí. With these verbs, “Me too” and “Me neither” never use yo. • NOT “Yo también” in reply to Me gusta — correct: A mí también.
Who likes it: the pronoun comes first

The “a + mí, ti, name” part adds emphasis and makes it clear who; before a name it is required.
