I can review the module: say where I'm going, what for and how, ask where a place is, understand a doctor's advice, and tell the three 在 apart.
What we review
What we review
Where to and what for: 去 / 来 / 回 + place + what to do. 想 (xiǎng) is “want to” (only + an action), 要 (yào) is “going to” and “I'll have” + a thing (我要一杯茶。(Wǒ yào yì bēi chá.); not ×我想一个面包 — Wǒ xiǎng yí gè miànbāo.); “I don't want to” is 不想 (bù xiǎng).
How you get there: 坐 (as a passenger) or 开 (at the wheel) + vehicle + 去 + place. Both patterns together: who — how — where to — what for (see the table).
Where: 请问,…在哪儿?(Qǐngwèn, … zài nǎr?) 左边 / 右边 go after the landmark; 我不知道…在哪儿。(Wǒ bù zhīdào… zài nǎr.)
Advice and “don't”: 多 + verb, 不要 + verb.
Three 在: “is somewhere”, “does something somewhere”, “is doing something right now” (see the table). Tell them apart by what comes after 在: a place with no verb, a place and a verb, or a verb right away. In English these are “is”, “at”, and “-ing”.
Where the module leaves you: now you can say where you're going and how, ask the way, understand a doctor's advice, and answer the phone.
The three 在
Look at what comes after 在: a place without a verb, a place and a verb, or a verb right away.
| Meaning | Example |
|---|---|
| is somewhere | 手机在桌子上。(Shǒujī zài zhuōzi shang.) |
| does something somewhere | 我们在学校吃午饭。(Wǒmen zài xuéxiào chī wǔfàn.) |
| is doing something right now | 他们在听。(Tāmen zài tīng.) |
Two patterns together: who — how — where to — what for
You can combine how you travel and why in one sentence.
| Who | How | Where to | What for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 王先生 (Wáng xiānsheng) | 坐出租车 (zuò chūzūchē) | 去饭店 (qù fàndiàn) | 吃饭 (chī fàn) |
| 我们 (Wǒmen) | 开车 (kāichē) | 去上海 (qù Shànghǎi) | 玩 (wán) |
