The job search funnel

The job search is a four-stage funnel

A job search works like a funnel: many applications at the top, one offer at the bottom. Each stage narrows the pool of candidates. The funnel has four steps: applications → screening → interviews → offer. At the application stage, you apply for jobs. At the screening stage, a recruiter or an ATS selects candidates based on their résumé and cover letter. At the interview stage, you meet the hiring manager in person or online. The offer is the final step, where you're offered the job. The key idea: each stage needs its own work. If you aren't getting invited to screenings, the problem is your résumé or applications that don't fit the job. If you're failing interviews, the problem is how you prepare for them. Simply “applying more” helps only if your bottleneck is too few applications. Find your narrowest stage: where exactly does the funnel narrow the most? That tells you where to put your effort first.
